The Pamplemousses garden is the oldest one in the Southern Hemisphere. This famous garden ranks among the finest botanical gardens in the world. Started in 1735 by the famous French governor Mahé de Labourdonnais it is known to naturalists around the world. This 60 – acres garden boast itself for the different species of plants, of which nearly 80 are palms. Of great interest are the Talipo plants which give flowers every 60 years after which they die. A magnificent collection of indigenous and exotic plants can also be seen.
